Abstract

This paper presents an analytical approach to calculate the losses of an E-core inductor with litz wire windings for DC/DC-applications with special emphasis on the end winding losses. The central assumption for calculating the end winding losses is the modeling of both end windings as an air coil. The magnetic field of this air coil is calculated by assuming that a single strand can be seen as an infinitely thin conductor. The calculated results are compared to a combined, planar and axisymmetric 2D-FEM model and to measurements. The results show that the losses in the end windings are significant and amount to 15 to 30 percent of the total losses.
