- Abstract
This thesis addresses the promotion of computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D printing in the classroom at general education schools from a theoretical and practical perspective. First of all, the historical development of the technologies, their basic mode of operation and areas of application are described. Within this framework, various school applications are mentioned and the work is thus placed in the context of existing projects, from which the relevance of the topic is also derived. Based on the theoretical foundation of implementation research, research on teacher training as well as concepts on modeling and modeling literacy, the main part presents the implementation and scientific investigation of different sub-projects to promote CAD and 3D printing in the classroom. These sub-projects as well as the use of CAD and 3D printing in the classroom will be reflected and discussed with regard to theoretical and practical aspects. Possibilities for the use in the classroom as well as for the further promotion of the technologies in the classroom are pointed out. Practical findings from project implementation and results from the accompanying research indicate a positive effect of CAD and 3D printing in the classroom on student motivation and learning success. The data from surveys of students from the projects also revealed a high level of acceptance and quality of the teaching-learning arrangement. Surveys of teachers who took part in training courses on CAD and 3D printing in the classroom showed that the course design was appropriately difficult, met the needs of the teachers and conveyed the content in a comprehensible manner. Based on the findings of the subprojects, it can be concluded that, for the successful implementation of the technologies, teachers should, if possible, take advantage of training opportunities to use materials and teaching concepts provided as part of this work. Thus, it would generally be necessary to equip schools with 3D printers nationwide and to encourage large projects from the education policy side to promote the technologies in the classroom. The teaching and training concepts and materials presented in this paper can serve as an initial basis and stimulus for implementation in the classroom.
