- Abstract
The paper reviews the measurements and calculations of three dimensional (3D) unsteady flows past a pair of ship sections in close proximity. The ship sections have different breadth and draft and represent typical ship-to-ship marine operation in a cross current. The behaviour of the vortex-shedding around the ship hulls is investigated numerically for all cases by CFD methods. For the two ship sections, simulations for certain Reynolds numbers are done by using Smagorinsky LES turbulence model. Finally the cross flow past the ship sections in side-by-side position is simulated and vortex interaction between the two bluff bodies is reviewed by using the software Fluent. The numerical predictions are compared with PIV results taken in a circulation tank.
