Abstract

Rankings of cities and economic regions are en vogue. This is mainly due to an increased interregional competition between city regions for mobile labour, capital and inhabitants. What position does Cologne hold in rankings based upon economic and social indicators when comparing city regions in North Rhine-Westphalia, in Germany and in the EU? What are the comparative strengths and weaknesses of Cologne according to indicators of regional economic performance and growth? What about the role of local economic development policies in Cologne?
