Abstract

Failures of mechanical components can result in high costs due to unused production capacities. Monitoring of the substantial components as for example the machine axes using process or machine condition monitoring aids can help to reduce these costs. Recognizing existing problems is not sufficient. It is more important to predict the remaining machine component lifetime. In particular, the ball screws pre-load reduces by the time and therefore the rigidity of the connection between the ball thread and the nut diminishes. A loss of control ability and the machining accuracy are consequences. In a preceding project, monitoring techniques were cexamined for horizontal ball screws. A transfer approach of these results on vertical spindles is presented in this article.
