Neue Herausforderungen für Kriminologie und Kriminalpolitik

Abstract

While the economy, public administration and many activities of everyday life are highly dependent upon the existence of the Internet, criminology has so far not developed a deepened interest in the matter. The article delivers an outline of today's criminological knowledge of Internet based crime and delinquency, and the questions arising from the findings. Following the Council of Europe's Cybercrime Convention, the article distinguishes between four types of crimes: offences against the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of computer data and systems, offences against legally protected interests committed by means of the Internet, offences related to the contents of Internet based information, and offences related to the infringement of copyright and related rights. The article attempts to give an assessment of the frequency of the particular crimes, of the damages, and of the relevant risk and protective factors. Anonymity plays a major role in this discussion. In closing, the article describes the challenges posed by the findings for further criminological research and criminal policy.
