Scale effects in the design of large diameter monopoles

Abstract

The monopile is an oftentimes used support structure for offshore wind energy converters (OWEC) of the multimegawatt class. It is a large diameter pile, which is considerably loaded by horizontal forces and bending moments. While for piles of small diameters the commonly used p-y-method yields accurate results, the procedure has shortcomings for larger diameter piles. This article describes investigations on this so-called diameter effect. Essentially, two recently developed procedures are examined, which are supposed to be advancements of the p-y-method. The applicability of these two procedures is discussed for different soil and pile characteristics. The investigations are based on comparative FE-calculations driven with the software ABAQUS. Capabilities, but also limits of applicability of the presented methods and still open questions concerning the behavior of horizontally loaded piles of large diameters are pointed out.
