Abstract

Assisted suicide is currently the subject of controversial debate in German Protestantism following the ruling of the Federal Constitutional Court in February 2020. The question of ecclesiastical involvement is particularly controversial. This article argues against a hasty appropriation of the Bible in the debate. Against the background of the typology of the Athenian and the Jerusalemite, it asks about the Christian-Jewish image of the human being and its potential to provide orientation in the moral formation of judgment. The protection of every human being and the dignity of that person's suffering are emphasized, and assisted suicide is defined in a final plea as a borderline case that should remain a borderline case and must not become normal.
