- Abstract
In order to ensure optimal care of seriously injured persons, the factors which substantially influence the probability of survival are examined. Based on prospective data collected from the trauma register of the DGU (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Unfallchirurgie) on seriously injured persons, firstly, bivariate lethality comparisons are made. This is followed by an analysis of the decisive factors from a multivariate perspective. It is ascertained that the duration of rescue from the time of accident to the time of arrival of the emergency physician is of crucial importance rather than the time of admission in the emergency room. As regards the type of accident, it can be stated that automobile drivers ceteris paribus have better chances of survival than other accident victims. The form of rescue is not significant in the probability of survival. The use of costly air rescue is only to be justified if the emergency surgeon reaches the accident location faster than by ground.
