Abstract

The contribution of Wanker and Wartner, also presented in this issue, has been the cause to sketch our own position on landscape planning. Landscape planning has gained increasing importance facing the present challenges of progressing climate change, modified requirements to the landscape and integrated political approaches. Additionally, these factors have contributed to an urgent need for reform. Against this background the study reflects success and problems of landscape planning. Landscape planning still is an important instrument to avoid or mitigate negative impacts on nature and landscape and to realise multi-functional measures. It has to be used more than before in order to make statements that can be specifically implemented and to efficiently channel the appropriation of funds. This means that the planning instrument of nature conservation will be of central importance for the overall planning as well as for other specific administrations. Practical planning today already allows an ample scope to react to many of the present requirements. At the same time approved contents and methods have to be preserved and further developed in the context of the Environmental Building Code.
