- Abstract
Meanwhile a wide knowledge base has been established about the relevance of ecosystems, biotopes and land use types for the retention, absorption or emission of greenhouse gases (GHG). So far, these findings have not been considered in current nature conservation strategies and measures. The paper contributes to fill this gap. It introduces the basics to assess the relevance of land use for the development of GHG and suitable mitigation measures relevant for nature conservation. In addition, potential synergies with other nature protection measures are analysed in order to identify further opportunities how to include mitigation measures in multifunctional targets. Whether these potential synergies can be achieved in a given case can only be proven by applying these instruments to a specific area. Using the Biosphere Reserve "Niedersächsische Elbtalaue" (Elbe Floodplain of Lower Saxony) as an example, sites requiring special consideration in terms of climate protection were identified and intersected with species protection measures which had been proposed in the development plan for the Biosphere Reserve. The results revealed high potential synergies and few potential conflicts between climate mitigation and species protection. Finally, the paper identifies starting points to include the climatic function of the biotopes into the existing instruments of nature protection.
