Abstract

The International Grid Control Cooperation (IGCC) optimizes the secondary control power activation within parts of the continental European grid. This optimization leads to additional control power flows between the participating transmission system operators. Due to the planned expansion of the IGCC, the quantity of control power flows will continue to rise. With the present concept, the control power is exchanged over the AC grid only. In order to maximize the transmission capability of the grid, the use of DC transmission capacities will become increasingly important in the future IGCC. This paper gives a detailed overview of the optimization potentials outlined above. Technical aspects are discussed and an approach for the implementation of HVDC systems into the optimization program of the IGCC is suggested. The implementation approach is tested in case studies. The results illustrate the impact of the implementation approach on the frequency and the load of the AC system.
