- Abstract
Current investigations on suction buckets for offshore wind energy turbines – the ProBucket project. Suction buckets are established offshore foundations for oil and gas platforms that have been used only marginally in the wind energy sector. These foundations can be installed together with the substructure, avoiding additional offshore operations such as grouting of transition pieces or jacket legs. Furthermore, unlike pile foundations, installing suction buckets is essentially silent, so no additional noise-reducing measures are necessary. For these reasons, suction buckets are a viable and potentially cost-effective foundation solution for offshore wind turbines. The ProBucket research project started in 2020 and is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. The project aims to reduce the uncertainties of the various design procedures through physical and numerical investigations. This paper explains the current challenges for designing and economical implementation of suction buckets for offshore wind turbines. Furthermore, the research activities of ProBucket are described.
