- Abstract
The current chapter surveys high-pressure water electrolysis. In the first part, general thermodynamic considerations for high-pressure electrolyzers are discussed. Instructive relations are derived for electric energy demand and the amount of heat released under both reversible and irreversible conditions. Classical simplifications are reviewed. Furthermore, different configurations for high-pressure electrolyzers are compared from an energetic viewpoint. In the second part, technology-specific aspects are discussed for high-pressure alkaline electrolyzers and high-pressure solid polymer electrolyzers. Typical technical realizations and operating conditions are reviewed. Governing processes and their pressure dependence are discussed and technology developments are sketched.
